David Brown, Vice-Chair of the Avon Bat Group, was the guide for a walk round the site at dusk on Friday. Armed with bat-detectors, which convert the ultrasonic chirps of the bats to a frequency we humans can hear, the group listened in to their amazing audio hunting. The most obvious species were Serotines, but they also heard Pipistrelles and a Myotis species (to be identified later).

Its after the official bioblitz end time but to add to the list of bat species noted this weekend – a couple of us did a bat survey tonight at one of the gateways into Ashton Court – we saw noctules and pipistrelles flying about, their calls also registering on our bat detectors. The main action we were watching, however, was a roost of lesser horseshoes emerging, these came out slightly later than the pips and the noctules when the light level was lower.
